New Grave Monument for the Gambogi couple

In Italy there is a growing interest for the artists Elin Danielson-Gambogi and Raffaello Gambogi. As a result of this there has been found several formerly unknown paintings by Elin Danielson-Gambogi in private collections in Italy.

Elin Danielson-Gambogi (1861-1919) and her husband Raffaello Gambogi (1874-1943) were buried at the Misericordia cemetery in Livorno. Since no-one has been taking care of the grave, at some point of time it was removed according to Italian law.

At the request by the Finnish Embassy in Rome, the Finnish consulate in Livorno started to look for the grave monument. The consulate managed to find the zink boxes into which the remains had been stored, and in 2004 a new monument was erected for the couple.

Before the project with the new grave monument was completed, there was an exhibition in 2002 at the Museo Civico Giovanni Fattori in Livorno with art works by Elin Danielson-Gambogi. An exhibition catalogue was also produced in conjunction with the exhibition.

The grave monument has been realized with the support of the Finnish Honorary Consul Giovanni Novelli and the funds he managed to raise from the Foundation of the Cassa di Risparmi di Livorno. The monument was unveiled in the presence of the Finnish Ambassador Alec Aalto and local Livornesian authorities at a ceremony on the 14th of December 2004. Before the ceremony Honorary Consul Giovanni Novelli held a press conference in Helsinki at the Didrichsen Art Museum.

On the initiative of Finland’s honorary consul in the Livorno-area in Italy, Giovanni Novelli, in December 2004, a new grave monument was put up on the tomb of Elin Danielson-Gambogi and Raffaello Gambogi in the Misericordia Cemetery in Livorno, Italy.
