Exhibition
Elin Danielson-Gambogi In Italian Light presents paintings from the Finnish painter Elin Danielson-Gambogi’s (1861-1919) Italian period that have not previously been seen in Finland. The exhibition also brings forward new research information on this artist, who was a major figure in Finnish art history, but spent most of her active life as an artist abroad.
Elin Danielson moved to Italy in the 1890s, having married the Italian artist Raffaello Gambogi. Rendering the light and the changing landscapes of Italy became primary themes of Danielson-Gambogi’s paintings. After 1913, she did not visit Finland again, which meant that most of her output from the 1910s remained in Italy. Apart from paintings that have emerged from Italian private collections over the last few years, works that coincide chronologically with the Italian period are also being borrowed for the exhibition from Finnish collections.
Apart from Elin Danielson-Gambogi’s own production, the exhibition also includes works on the same themes painted by Raffaello Gambogi. The exhibition is accompanied by a catalogue, which is based on recent research on Danielson-Gambogi’s years in Italy by art historian Virve Heininen.

Raffaello Gambogi, Villa Benvenuti 1915
The Benvenuti house was the last home the Gambogis lived in together in the 1910s. Both artists used the house as a motif in their paintings.
