In the paintings that stem from 1997, the basic tone and mood is essentially different. They have been given a touch of melancholy that serves as a sounding board for the expression as a whole. Both style and composition have become simplified and there is a greater concentration on the central elements of the picture. The Queen seems generally to have chosen motifs of a simpler nature and toned down the colours in relation to her earlier works with their strong colours. This change in the mode of expression can be sensed in Palace Walk I and II from 1997.
Palace Walk I shows a view down along one of the walks in the park surrounding Fredensborg Palace, with the sunlight sparkling through the rows of trees and casting sunny yellow spots on the verdant green of the lawn. Its pendant, Palace Walk II, is a more autumnal depiction of the walk with greyish-brown foliage and the general feeling of an overcast sky. A painting such as Winter Wall, with its transverse fields of light, wine red and green, likewise has a touch of melancholy about it.
