Cloud and Rampart is a continuation of the cloud theme. Here the drama is intensified and, in the artist's progressive dialogue with the canvas, the painting becomes a form of abstraction on the original natural phenomenon. The Danish word 'vold' can be interpreted either as the earthwork shown at the bottom of the picture, or as violence in a figurative sense. The violent cumulus-like cloud, the flat scorched landscape and the remains of a fire in the background bring to mind fatal battles in history.
The Queen quite certainly had the Balkan wars in mind when the picture was painted. This interpretation makes Cloud and Rampart stand out as a mental image of war. By drawing parallels between nature and the mind, the Queen touches on a trend in modern abstraction of nature. At the same time the picture's symbolic content may be traced back to the symbolist mood painting that was cultivated in Scandinavia around 1900.
