The idea of making an annual Christmas set, with a spoon and a fork, started in Denmark in 1910. Every year a new artist is called to design the motif for the spoon.

Queen Margrethe tells about the theme she chose for her Christmas spoon:

"What is a Christmas spoon? A Christmas motif created in gilded silver and using enamel. It must shine. It shall tell about the forthcoming Christmas. My inspiration to this theme is from the Altar of Verdun situated in Klosterneuburg in the outskirts of Vienna. It is a large sized work of art manufactured in gold and enamel by Master Nikoalus in the year 1181. The Altar of Verdun is one of the most beautiful works in Roman art, both artistically and technically. Its style and form fascinates me greatly. In my mind it fits splendidly to the design of a Christmas spoon. "
