MARGRETHE II - The Lord of the Rings

Inspired by The Lord of the Rings

Queen Margrethe has produced drawings and paintings ever since childhood. The reading of J.R.R. Tolkienīs The Lord of the Rings at the beginning of the 1970īs inspired her greatly, and was in fact the final push to express herself in a visual form.

In the beginning she was, however, uncertain of the sustainability of her talent and therefore chose to conceal her identity under the pseudonym Ingahild Grathmer. Nowadays she signs her paintings with an elegant M.

The story by Tolkien fascinated her mind completely and the author's landscape descriptions created images in her mind's eye. This "encounter" with the world of The Lord of the Rings not only overhelmed her with impressions but also created an urgent need to express these in a visual form. This resulted in several drawings and watercolours and gave the Queen an opportunity to concretely interpret her inner visions.

Delighted by the Tolkiens' book the Queen sent her drawings to the author. He liked her drawings, and in 1977 they were published in the Danish version of the book, redrawn by the British artist Eric Fraser.
