MORTALS, SAINTS AND ANGELSKuutti Lavonen combines various traditions and styles in his portraits. His classicist figures - angels and saints - have their starting points in the art of the Italian and French Renaissance and baroque, but without being direct quotations. They acquire an expressive imprint from his method, and his use of colour, line and splashes.The technique gives the images a sculptural quality. His works are characterised by timelessness and depth, and an atmosphere of melancholy. The exhibition shows a retrospective selection of the artistīs works as well as his newest production, especially made for this exhibition. On show is also his portrait of the President of Finland, Mrs Tarja Halonen made in 2002 and printed on a stamp on December 1, 2003. |
