Ethics in archaeology
A central focus for Professor Demarest is to ensure that the indigenous Mayans are aware of their own cultural heritage. The local Mayans are being taught to work at the excavations and to produce replicas of the monuments. One of the main objectives is to create ecotourism in the area for the Mayans to manage. Through these activities the Mayans can develop their living conditions and create meaningful businesses for themselves.
