Palace construction
The investigations have determined that a structure previously identified as a minor palace is not only one of the largest and most elaborate residences of ancient Maya kings discovered but also one of the best preserved. The monumentality of such building represents the power of Cancuen rulers.
With more than 200 rooms built around 11 courtyards in three levels and a total size of 25,000m² , this eighth century royal palace is about the same size as the central acropolis in Tikal. The palace size is equivalent to 5-6 football fields.
An important stage - or an ancient hotel?
The palace dimensions and complexity show the importance of the activities carried out in its interior courtyards. Besides its function as a royal residence, it was the main arena for diplomatic activities, such as political alliances between kingdoms. In Cancuen´s instance, given its economic and political importance, the kings required an adequate place to receive important visitors from neighboring and distant kingdoms. Of course, several rooms were needed to host the large family of Taj Chan Ahk, when visiting home. At the same time, the royal palace played a role within the city, as a symbol of authority and as a presentation area for the public rituals of the rulers and other important nobles.
