The Sculpture Park of Nissbacka Manor

As in earlier years, Laila Pullinen's large granite- and bronze sculptures are presented in the Nissbacka Manor Sculpture Park 1.6. - 31.8.2003. For the anniversary year Pullinen has completed three large granite sculptures, the largest of which is Dike (2003, the Goddess of Justice), weighing six tons. The work 'celebrates' the decision taken by the Ministry of the Environment and the Supreme Administrative Court to not to protect the northern part of Nissbacka.

One of the new sculptures is named Icarus. By its theme it complements an earlier sculpture, Dedalus (1996), and its technical realization reflects the story behind the works. Dedalus stands stately and harmoniously, on its granite surface a strong and solid tension, which is given rhythm by red, - in this case unusually focused and serene - lines, typical of the red black stone of Mäntsälä. In the bronze part of the work there are tensions and counter-tensions; an understanding of air and winds, of secret doctrines, of the taming of gravity, and intuition brought by experience.

Icarus (2003), on the other hand, is the opposite. The massive, granite form lies on the ground, it has deep lines on its surface, something spasmodic in its tense form. A frail harmony is born of its dramatic nature and vice versa: a strong winglike form close to the ground, still full of vigor and elasticity, yet clearly defeated. Its example is to admonish, it seems to repeat its father Dedalus' words: don't fly too high, lest your wings melt, and not too low, lest your wings get wet.

Due to their large size it is difficult to present these sculptures in a museum or in a gallery. In the Sculpture Park in Nissbacka they are in a dialogue with the lush garden as well as with the protected, historical surroundings.
