SALMELA ART CENTRE 7.6.-10.8.2003
Surprisingly enough, the lines and the veil-like structures following the suggested movement that can be found in the surfaces of the sculptures, can also be found in the drawings. In the works of the 1970's some areas are emphasized, but this does not mean that they are the more important. The thin, virtuoso line is as important as the passionately outlined face and these contrasts counterbalance each other.
Like in the sculptures, the human form acts as a point of departure. What is essential is movement perceived through the person and the event; the work is a depiction of the spiritual state of the person.
Most clearly this is conveyed in the series named Athene, carried out by ink-wash technique and red crayon, presented at the Salmela Art Centre. The same theme has been studied through six drawings. At a very close look, the spectator can see the drawing's diagonal, abstracted structure and this way find the features that link them to the themes that Pullinen has studied in her abstract sculptures.
One theme Laila Pullinen has studied in these works is womanhood, especially its various representations. The analogy with Antiquity works as a counterbalance through which the artist studies what has happened to the concept of womanhood in the course of history, and what compromises women have made when approaching men in the name of equality. What is important, is that this is done through a visual method: the artist does not seek to comment through words, but purely estethically.
