RAFAEL WARDI - The Soul of Colour

Rafael Wardi’s 80th birthday celebratory exhibition ’The Soul of Colour’ presents the artist’s work from the 1950s onwards.

Rafael Wardi is the master of light and colour. He makes colour live in an utterly unique way and his yellows in particular tell us of life´s multiplicity.

Among the works on display are his portrait of President Halonen and Quartet, which he painted for Helsinki City Theatre.

The exhibition includes Wardi’s abstract works from the 1950s, sensitive studies of children painted in the 1960s, female figures from the 1970s and portraits of the frail and fragile elderly in the 1990s. Wardi has also sensitively captured the radiant glow of the sun but also Helsinki life in his harbour scenes and narratives of the people of Harjutori Square.

In the 2000s his motifs have been drawn from the summery landscapes and colourful gardens of Kultaranta, the President’s summer residence. His most recent works, graphic pastels of stormy seas, are from spring 2008.
